The Environmental Management and Technology (ENVMT) program evolved from the Environmental Studies courses directed by Charles Ford, MS, Marine Biology (Emeritus) in 1962.
Originally the course offerings included urban ecology and desert studies taught by a multidisciplinary team including a biologist, botanist, geologist, historian and psychologist.
The Self-Reliant House, the current home for the program constructed by Merritt College students, California Conservation Corps members, professional crews and volunteers opened in 1982.
Designed to demonstrate sustainability features optional in every day homes, the Self Reliant House provides an unusual classroom offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Robin Freeman, MS, co-coordinated the program with Charles Ford beginning in 1989 and continued to promote the hands-on learning feature of ENVMT following Ford’s retirement. Freeman continues to teach and share his skills today.
